Google I/O 2026: search agents are taking over!

Google I/O 2026

Tuesday 19 May 2026 marked the long-awaited annual Google conference: Google I/O.

After quietly weaving AI into its products over the past few years, the tech giant is now shifting into a higher gear. On the agenda: autonomous AI agents, the rollout of Gemini 3.5 Flash, and a major overhaul of the search bar.

Here’s everything you need to know about Google’s latest announcements!

The search agent revolution: when AI searches and acts on your behalf

What is a search agent?

A search agent is a personalised AI assistant that analyses the web in the background, around the clock, monitoring specific information and sending users synthesised alerts.

This is arguably the most significant announcement for businesses. Google Search is no longer just an information tool — it’s become an active agent that acts on behalf of users. People will now be able to create AI agents directly from the search bar and delegate complex tasks to them.

Among the key benefits Google has announced:

  • AI agents available 24/7

Day and night, AI agents run in the background, scanning the web (official websites, blogs, social media, etc.) to notify users as soon as something matches one of their searches — whether that’s a flat becoming available or a specific product launching.

  • Streamlined booking journeys

From summer 2026 (initially in the United States), bookings will be possible directly through AI agents, designed to make the user experience frictionless. For local experiences — such as finding a restaurant for a group with specific requirements (for example: “find a private karaoke room for 6 people on a Friday evening with late-night dining”) — Google Search will display real-time pricing, availability, and a direct link to book with the chosen provider.

  • Agents that make phone calls for your customers

For service industries such as banking and insurance, beauty, or healthcare, the shift goes even further. Users will be able to ask Google to call local businesses on their behalf to schedule an appointment or obtain specific information.

The other major announcements from I/O 2026

Beyond this agentic revolution, Google is embedding AI across every layer of its search engine. Here are the three other announcements you won’t want to miss:

Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model powering Google Search’s AI Mode for users worldwide. Built specifically for speed and handling long workflows, it’s fuelling the explosive growth of AI Mode, which has just surpassed one billion monthly users (source: Google).

The traditional search field is undergoing its most significant transformation in a quarter of a century, becoming fully intelligent and multimodal. Users can now type long, descriptive queries, or drop in photos, videos, files, and Chrome tabs. The bar anticipates intent and enables a genuine, flowing conversation — maintaining full context even across follow-up questions.

To deliver ever more relevant and personalised responses, Google can now create custom interfaces tailored to any question a user asks. Displayed as tables, interactive visuals, charts, or simulations, these mini-apps adapt instantly to each query.

Adapt your visibility for the age of autonomous agents

By shifting Google Search into the era of autonomous agents and multimodal search, Google is fundamentally rewriting the purchase journey. User behaviour is changing: people no longer type simple keywords — they have conversations with the search engine, share files, and let AI make calls or book appointments on their behalf.

For businesses, this paradigm shift only reinforces how critical it is to keep your local visibility and online reputation in top shape. To stay ahead, keep focusing on:

  • Maintaining a flawless online presence: with AI agents capable of calling your outlet or booking directly based on real-time availability, even a small error on your business listings (e.g. opening hours, services, or contact details) could cost you a customer — handing them straight to a competitor.
  • Looking after your online reputation: Google’s AI agents scan online reviews to validate users’ hyper-specific queries. The more your customers mention your strengths in their reviews (e.g. “honest repair service”, “excellent customer service”, “pushchair-friendly access”), the more likely the AI is to send its user to you rather than to a competitor.
  • Deploying optimised digital storefronts: a high-performing Store Locator and business listings rich in attributes and detailed descriptions are now the only way to effectively feed Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) algorithms.
