Currently only available in the United States, electric charging stations are making their appearance on Waze. The GPS application has partnered with Volkswagen to launch this new feature.
With electric vehicles increasing in popularity, it was obvious for Waze to align itself with its competitors and offer a location feature for charging stations. Electric car drivers will now be able to see and add stations along their current route on Waze.
Google Maps had begun to add support for the display of charging stations for electric vehicles in 2019, with data available in real-time. This new feature will therefore allow Waze to expand its target and catch up with its main competitors such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Chargemap.
“This is an incredibly exciting moment for Waze, as Volkswagen is adding electric vehicle charging stations to our map for the first time, ahead of a very busy vacation season,” said Jeffrey Kohl, Head of Industry at Waze.
To celebrate the partnership with Volkswagen, Waze also allows users to change their car’s icon in the app to Volkswagen ID.4 EV.
Unfortunately, this feature is not yet available outside of the U.S, Volkswagen Group of America, has focused the feature launch on its company’s, Electrify America, rechargeable charging stations in the United States.
However, with the rise of electric cars, we can expect a future appearance of charging stations on Waze across the globe.
