Google Maps: a new way to discover businesses with generative AI

Google Maps Generative AI

Google just announced a new feature on Google Maps designed to help users find places that suit their specific preferences using generative AI technology. This new feature stems from the American giant’s experiments with the Search Generative Experience (SGE) on Google Search results.

This feature aims to assist users in planning outings or activities that accommodate various needs and interests, such as dietary restrictions, location preferences, or pet-friendly options.

Initially launching as an early access experiment for select Local Guides in the U.S., the feature allows users to simply state what they’re looking for, such as “places with a vintage vibe in SF,” and receive tailored recommendations. Results are categorized and accompanied by photos, ratings, and reviews to help users make informed decisions.

An optimized Google Business Profile is more important than ever!

Having a well-optimised Google listing will be crucial to taking advantage of this new way of searching on Google Maps. Services, attributes and secondary categories are essential to provide Google with all the information it needs about your establishment and help you move up the search results.

Google explained that its “AI models […] analyze Maps’ rich information about nearby businesses and places along with photos, ratings and reviews from the Maps community to give […] trustworthy suggestions”.

Users can further refine their search by asking follow-up questions, such as “How about lunch?” or “What about options for kids?” The AI-powered suggestions are said to be able to adapt to changing circumstances, offering recommendations for indoor activities on a rainy day or family-friendly options.

For Google, “this is just the beginning of how we’re supercharging Maps with generative AI.” We can expect more experimentation with AI moving forward, presenting new challenges and opportunities for local businesses. Partoo will keep you up-to-date on all important news!
