Google Reviews Instability: What You Need to Know About Recent Disappearances

disparition des avis google

Since February 2026, many businesses have noticed a sudden drop in the review count on their Google Business Profiles. If you are seeing this on your listings, you are not alone: this is a global movement affecting all sectors of activity.

Why This Instability in Review Counts?

When faced with disappearing reviews across a large number of Google Business Profiles, two major overlapping issues must be distinguished:

1. Display Bug (Technical Issue)

This is a malfunction where Google stores the review in its database but fails to display it visually. Following the massive wave of disappearances in February 2026, Google’s teams have not yet officially spoken out to clarify the situation.

However, facing a similar situation in February 2025, Victoria Kroll, Product Operations Manager at Google, stated:

“Most affected profiles now display accurate ratings and reviews. However, while we have made significant progress, some profiles may still experience a temporary lower count. No reviews were unpublished due to this issue.”

This statement confirms that your reviews still exist in Google’s databases, even if they are not correctly “syncing” to your profile at this moment. It is highly likely that we are facing a similar situation today.

This is not the only time this type of problem has occurred, as evidenced by this Search Engine Roundtable article from October 2025.

2. Crackdown on Fraud (with AI Moderation)

Google has also tightened its policies to combat suspicious or non-compliant content (insults, lack of real visits, etc.). The system now often operates “in batches”: Google removes reviews en masse for analysis, then reinstates only those validated as truthful.

Billions of Google Maps listings are affected. Data observed among Partoo clients highlights the scale of the issue: in mid-February 2026, out of 4.3 million reviews that disappeared globally, 3.8 million returned after verification. This means Google permanently deleted 500,000 reviews, or 12% of the verified total.

In early March 2026, over 2 million reviews were again temporarily removed from Partoo clients’ listings alone before being fully reinstated by the end of the week.

Under pressure from new international regulations against fake reviews (such as the FTC in the USA or the DSA in Europe), Google is now using artificial intelligence tools (such as Gemini) to filter content more aggressively.

“We are observing increasingly strict moderation of UGC content, which — let’s remember — is the property of the platforms. Our Customer Success and Care teams are here to help you monitor and decode these changes.”Julie Cadalen, Chief Customer Officer at Partoo.

What You Might Be Seeing on Your Listings

This disappearance of Google reviews does not manifest in the same way for everyone. Based on field feedback from Partoo clients and analysis from local SEO experts, several scenarios coexist.

Here are the most common signs:

  • Sudden drop in the counter: Some businesses see their total review count decrease by several dozen in a single night, without apparent explanation. This phenomenon is linked to both the display bug and moderation.
  • The “Contributor’s Paradox”: A customer assures you they left a review (they still see it on their own Google profile), but it remains invisible to you and the public. Generally linked to moderation, and it is difficult to know if the user is being truthful.

  • Content-less notifications: You receive an email alert saying “You received a new review,” but when clicking the link, the profile does not display it. A phenomenon linked to a technical bug.
  • Mathematical discrepancy: The overall figure at the top of your profile does not match the actual sum of reviews you can read by scrolling through the list. A phenomenon linked to a display bug.

The variations observed today cannot be explained by a single cause. As Thibault Renouf, Co-CEO of Partoo, emphasises:

“The variations in the number of reviews observed today are the result of several combined phenomena: display bugs on Google’s side and a strengthening of AI moderation systems. This multi-factorial nature makes reading and resolving the problem particularly complex.”

A few figures to illustrate the scale

While every situation is unique, global trends show an acceleration of these anomalies. On certain data samples tracked by analysts, review deletions or maskings have surged spectacularly!

According to observations from several local SEO experts and the analysis of large data samples, the volume of review anomalies has jumped by more than 500% compared to usual averages during the peak periods of 2025 and 2026.

It is important to clarify that these figures are global observations: they do not mean your listing is being penalised, but rather that Google’s filtering system is going through a phase of intense adjustments.

A sense of “Déjà Vu”?

However, facing a similar situation in February 2025,This is not the first time Google has encountered display difficulties. Similar episodes took place in February and October 2025.

Our advice for navigating this period

To protect your e-reputation during these fluctuations, we recommend adopting these habits:

  • Patience and Backups: Reviews are Google’s property, and they can delete any content deemed suspicious. Feel free to regularly download your reviews via Partoo to keep a record and potentially reuse them on your Store Locator.
  • Adopt Ethical Collection Practices: Never offer a reward (gift, discount, reduction) in exchange for a review. Google detects and heavily penalises these “conditional” incentives.
  • Focus on Post-Purchase Collection: Highlight a QR code to your Google profile in-store, but do not pressure customers to leave a review during their visit. Send your request after they leave so their feedback is perceived as an authentic and thoughtful step by the algorithms.
  • Avoid Content Guidelines: Do not give customers specific keywords to include or writing instructions. Let them express themselves in their own words to avoid triggering anti-fraud filters.
  • Report to Support: If your counter does not return to normal after some time, contact Google Support, specifying the exact number of missing reviews and the date they were noticed.

You should continue review management best practices by responding to all reviews, whether positive or negative. Respond professionally and personalise your messages to foster customer loyalty.

Partoo, your everyday ally

Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and remain on constant watch for Google’s technical communications. Our role is to provide visibility where platforms sometimes lack clarity.

“At Partoo, we regularly exchange with Google teams in the United States to follow these developments. But this is an extremely complex subject […] and even on Google’s side, not all situations can always be explained or resolved immediately,” explains Thibault Renouf. “These developments impact millions of points of sale worldwide. We now receive many inquiries from brands — whether Partoo clients or not — seeking to understand these variations. In this context, our priority remains to best support our clients.”

The entire Partoo team is fully mobilised to support you and keep you informed of the return to normal.
